What Is a Business Operating System?

Understand what connected business software does and when a small company actually needs it.

A business operating system is a shared place for the work behind running a company. Rather than treating sales, stock, staff and reporting as separate spreadsheets, it connects records so a change in one area can inform another. The name does not imply one product must do every job.

What should be connected?

A completed sale should appear in sales records and, where relevant, change available stock. A refund should be traceable. Staff should have access appropriate to their role. A business owner should be able to review the activity behind a summary rather than trust an unexplained number.

When is it useful?

Connected software matters when manual handoffs create repeated errors: stock counts disagree with sales, several people edit different spreadsheets, or the owner spends hours reconciling daily figures.
